Word Origins is an evidence-informed program designed to provide the next step in spelling, reading and vocabulary instruction for students in middle to upper primary school and beyond. Level 2 supports the development of high lexical quality by introducing over 150 additional Latin and Greek morphemes. This expands students’ ability to read and spell thousands of high-utility words frequently encountered across the upper primary and high school curriculum. Building on the solid foundation of Level 1, Level 2 consolidates prior learning and deepens vocabulary knowledge through explicit instruction across the multiple layers of the English language: phonology, orthography, semantics, morphology, syntax, and etymology.

As a cumulative program, Word Origins Level 2 builds directly on the vocabulary and morphological knowledge developed in Level 1. All students - regardless of age or year level - should, ideally, complete Level 1 before progressing to Level 2. Guidance is provided to teachers on steps to take if a student has missed Level 1 prior to joining a class commencing Level 2.
